Abstract
The concern in Hungary among the Japanese begun with the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Austria-Hungary in 1869. But it was necessary to wait the interwar period to appear academic studies on Hungary in Japan. The scholars, mostly linguists, who had studied in Hungary with the scholarship based on the 1938 Cultural Agreement, started to play active roles after the Second World War, especially in linguistic, literary and historical studies. Today the Association for East European Studies, which was founded in 1975, functions as a forum for researchers, and the Japanese students have opportunities to learn Hungarian language or to study Hungarian history in several universities.
