In 1856 William Morris was involved in the Oxford and Cambridge Magazine both as a proprietor and an editor. Since each contribution in the magazine was published anonymously, there remains some works whose authorship are still doubtful. “Ruskin and the Quarterly” is one of the most controversial ones, and F.S. Boos admits it is hard to decide whether Morris or Burne-Jones. In contrary to the lively discussion of its authorship, the content of this article isn’t discussed so often. This article investigates the content of “Ruskin and the Quarterly” and its influence on Morris’s first poem, Defence of Guenevere and Other Poems published in 1858. First, reexamining Boos’s study of the changes of authorship, I confirm both Morris and Burne-Jones did not claim its authorship positively. Then, I read “Ruskin and the Quarterly” referring to Elizabeth Eastlake’s review in the Quarterly Review which criticize Ruskin’s Modern Painters vol. III and Ruskin’s text itself. As a result of it, it is certain that the difference between Ruskin and Eastlake is whether they admit the realistic description of St. Peter in a cartoon for the Sistine Chapel tapestry which was committed by Raphael. “Ruskin and the Quarterly” supports Ruskin and Pre-Raphaelites who practice his realism, appealing the severe living condition of working-class people. It is also clarified that Charles Eastlake, her husband and the president of Royal Academy, had once studied Raphael’s cartoon, following the instruction of Benjamin Robert Haydon. Haydon was ridiculed as Cockney Raphael by John Gibson Lockhart, for his political sympathy with Leigh Hunt who supported reform with Keats during the reactionary conservatism after the French Revolution. Since the excess realism in Defence of Guenevere and Other Poems is severely criticized by Saturday Review using Leigh Hunt’s appreciation of Keats by way of retaliation, and Morris is criticized as a Pre-Raphaelite poet, it is Morris who seems to be regarded as the author of “Ruskin and the Quarterly.”
