本稿では、モダニティの普遍的基準と、なかんずくメトロポリスのモダニティが論じられた場としての、19世紀後半の万国博覧会を取り上げる。とりわけ植民地の人びとの展示によって可視化されたこのような諸基準の問題性とならんで、本稿ではとくに、本来的には教育を目的とする万国博覧会に対して、消費や、文化、そして娯楽の面においてメトロポリス特有のサービスを備えていた開催地が有する独自の意義について問いかける。最後に、19世紀末より看過し得なくなった万国博覧会の没落を扱う。万国博覧会は、ますます専門特化の進む専門家たちの会議によってその役割が継承されていくようになる一方、オリンピックのような新たな規格によってその機能が部分的に代替されることとなる。
